Ode To The Channel

Commissioned by Creative Folkestone for the Folkestone Triennial, Rachel composed an original choral work for internationally renowned artist Emeka Ogboh's immersive artwork Ode To The Channel. The work received critical acclamation and the sound installation featuring the composition was selected to remain in situ after the Triennial.

"Emeka had ideas for the music his poem was to be set to, but he was happy for me to let the piece go where it needed to. During the initial briefing he said:

"I want it to sound a bit like when the sirens come out of the water in O Brother, Where Art Thou?..."

"Ideas for the pentatonic scale, swelling harmonies and a slightly vintage vibe immediately flooded in and the composition was off and running."

The composition was performed by a hand picked selection of Folkestone's most talented singers, and was played throughout the day during the Triennial via weather-proof maritime speakers in Folkestone's most notorious spot by the sea, known for its temperamental wave activity.
